Lucinda Williams Debuts New Song At Joplin Tribute

by Tim Cashmere - November 17 2009

Songstress Lucinda Williams has debuted a new song written in honour of Janis Joplin at a concert called Kozmic Blues: The Life and Music of Janis Joplin last night.

The show featured performances by Williams, Roky Erickson, Ray Benson and many more and closed with Williams’ yet-to-be-titled song at the end after she also played ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ and ‘Ball and Chain’.

Soul singer Betty LaVette was on hand to perform her version of ‘Piece of my Heart’, which she recorded in 1969 and former 13th Floor Elevators front man Roky Erickson played his former band’s ‘You’re Gonna Miss Me’ and Joplin’s ‘Oh My Soul’.

The 13th Floor Elevators were a huge early influence on Janis Joplin from her early days in Texas.

The show was put on by The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum and Case Western Reserve University as part of the American Music Masters series.
