Al Martino, one of the great American crooners, has died at his home in Pennsylvania today at age 82.
Martino started making hits in 1952 when he had a number one with ‘Here In My Heart’. The song was also a number one hit in the UK making him the first American to have a number one hit in England.
More than 20 years later, in 1975, he was still on the charts with ‘To The Door of the Sun’.
Italian-American Al Martino also had a part in the Godfather playing singer Johnny Fontane, a character based on Frank Sinatra. He reprised the role in ‘The Godfather II’ and ‘The Godfather III’.
Just last week, Martino MC’d the Mario Lanza 50th Anniversary Concert in New York.
He had planned to work well into 2010 with dates up to June, 2010 published in his touring schedule.
He recently recorded the new song ‘Trying To Find My Way’.
Al Martino, (born Al Cini), is survived by his wife Judi, son Al and daughters Alison and Alana.
