Journey's Revelation album has sold 104,000 units in the US this week, and that is just through Wal-Mart.
The 3-disc set features 11 new songs on CD 1, 11 re-recorded classics on CD plus a live DVD as disc 3.
The album, released on June 3, was up 1400% on the previous Journey album 'Generations' and their best first week seller since 'Trial By Fire' in 1996.
Journey will tour the US from July 9 with Heart and Cheap Trick.
The Wal-Mart success follows on from the Eagles 2.8 million seller 'Long Road Out Of Eden' which sold 711,000 units in the first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Irving Azoff, who has both Journey and the Eagles as part of his empire, is quoted in the New York Times today as saying that the Wal-Mart marketing push behind the album made it a much better deal for the band than going through a major label, like they have on previous releases.
"With the downturn, the labels couldn't match the marketing commitments that Wal-Mart could make," Azoff told the New York Times. "It was well in excess of anything a label could do."
AC/DC was reported on the weekend to be planning a similar release for their new album through Wal-Mart. The AC/DC album will be released later this year.
